In the day and age of caramel macchiatos and strawberry foam matcha lattes, it seems many coffee shops have lost the point. It is understandable to structure your business model towards the younger market, but when coffee shops no longer offer a standard drip coffee, or are “out of hot coffee” by noon, a line needs to be drawn.
For those who are in search of the classic cup of coffee, never fear as it still exists. Here are three spots to taste if you are looking for the best black coffee in University City.
Top Hat Coffee Lounge
If you are taking a walk on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus, or just in search of a great spot for coffee and good eats, Top Hat Coffee Lounge is just that. Their coffee presents a very rich cup with an extra kick, as their espresso blend is roasted and ground in-house. The homey and very bright interior pairs incredibly well with a tall cup of coffee and one of their world-class waffles. The Valentine or the Bacon + Anna + Butter are great choices if you prefer a sweet or a high protein option, respectively. Located at 3131 Walnut Street, Top Hat Coffee Lounge has an incredibly refreshing and energizing cup of coffee, alongside a great aesthetic and mouth-watering waffles.
Madis Coffee Roasters
Since its opening in 2022, Madis Coffee Roasters has immediately become a campus classic. Their Four Seasons Blend is a fantastic medium to dark roast that has hints of chocolate and tropical fruit, featuring a Central American taste. It is a great pick-me-up cup for your morning and pairs well with their strong selection of pastries and incredibly fresh-tasting avocado toast. Take a walk up Lancaster Avenue and visit Madis Coffee Roasters to study, grab a great cup of coffee and enjoy the ambiance.
Avril50
If you are looking for a phenomenal selection of freshly brewed coffees, as well as a different experience inside, make a trip to Avril 50, located at 3406 Sansom Street. In this small, intimate shop, you are immediately greeted with the strong scents of different blends, teas and baked goods. The French vanilla blend, a medium roast, is incredibly rich and truly emulates a perfect black coffee’s profile. In addition, the store offers a wide selection of international magazines, cards featuring fine art and tobacco products. As the quarter drags on, if you’re looking to spice up your coffee shop experience, Avril50 is the place to be.
