The polkadot tea.pot: fashion is not wrong

I think that it is comforting knowing there is at least one thing out there, no matter how screwed up the rest of your life seems to be, that will never go wrong.

Fashion is not the glitz and glam of the red carpet. It is not patterns of blue and red and bright magenta layered on top of each other, and it is not under any circumstances a bag charm.

Fashion is not many things. I can fill pages and pages of what fashion is not, but I fear I am simply unable or maybe just ineligible to tell you what fashion is. I think it is what gets me up in the morning. I think it is my confidence, I think it is my passion, I think it is what makes me feel the most like myself.

It is throwing an ankle-length cheetah print trench coat over the sweatpants I have been in for three days, all the jewelry I can find, the largest, most obnoxious sunglasses I own, a pair of my Amazon dope tabis, and walking out the door without a second thought.

I have come to terms with the idea that what I put on looks good — and I am not even going to add some snarky comment in parentheses -that is how serious I am. Fashion can never be wrong. Since that is the moral of this article, I guess I must explain. I am coming to learn that I am the type of writer who wants to put down just shy of seven sentences, some obscure, not-so-grown breaking, phrase at the end, and have the people figure out the rest. Unfortunately, I cannot do that, so I am forced to continue.

The notion that something cannot go together or that colors do not match, or that something is too over the top, is wrong. Or, to not make a blunt statement without facts, is considered uneducated information – by me specifically.

This is a little scattered but hey if you are looking for a by-the-book article, I fear this is not the place. I guess what I am trying to say is that I think it is in the bustle and fury of the world we live in, it is nice to have a friend. One that does not require much work, stamina, or smiles. One we can go to with tears in our eyes or teeth busting out of our mouth (like a big smile … if you missed that).

I guess I can give you a hint towards your definition of fashion, or where you can find it. It is in your phone case. It is in the way that your hair curls after you sleep on it wet. It is in your bed sheets and your trash can and your heels sitting front and center in your closet that you only wore once because they are astoundingly uncomfortable. It is in the tattoo you really want to get, but you are too scared of your mom to get it. And finally, it is in the name of your cat.

So next time someone tells you something about your own outfit, you just remember what I have told you. Nothing in fashion is wrong; there are no rules. Put a codfish on your head and call it a day.

And remember, the best part about all of this is if you asked me again in an hour, I would tell you the complete opposite and insist you shun anyone for ever saying there are no rules for fashion.

Do not ever listen to a word I say 🙂
