For 100 years, The Triangle has been a staple of Drexel’s campus. From World War II to Wawa’s unfortunate closing, this student newspaper has covered all the “sides and angles” of Drexel and world news.
Being a member of The Triangle is, and has always been, a passion project. Over the past century, generations of students have poured every second of their free time into creating content for this newspaper. Decades ago, writers and editors would spend an entire week planning newspapers by hand, developing photos in dark rooms, and driving through the night to deliver the paper for printing. Now, we at The Triangle spend hours on end in a rather love-hate relationship with our office: debating headlines, editing stories, and doing our best to deliver the news of the day and give students a voice on the issues that matter the most to them.
The Triangle is a thread that connects generations of students from 1926 to today. It is an honor to see your words, photos, and art published in a newspaper of record. But, the greatest honor as a member of The Triangle is belonging to the community of thousands of Drexel students and alumni who are all bonded in the shared laughs, tears, and belief that the stories of Drexel students should be heard.
The Triangle has looked different over time. Admittedly, there are articles in our archives that make us cringe today, but this paper has always been a sanctuary for students expressing their thoughts, a time capsule for what was felt in the zeitgeist of that moment.
Make no mistake, reaching this milestone has not been easy. The Triangle has experienced financial hardship, institutional pushback, and even went dark just a few years ago. Yet, we endured, because the students and alumni who love this paper refused to let its legacy disappear. Today, The Triangle is stronger than it has ever been.
In 1926, The Triangle was not much more than a newsletter that updated students on the happenings of our then-minuscule campus. A century later, we are an established newspaper and business with over 125 active members, publishing hundreds of articles every year, read by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Over the years, The Triangle has also expanded in scope. Our coverage now spans everything from campus protests to the feats of our championship athletics teams.
As we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we do so with enormous pride and immense responsibility. While we are the temporary stewards of this century-old paper, the real legacy of The Triangle lies within the students who care enough to show up every week and ask the right questions.
Here’s to another 100 years of student journalism.
Sincerely,
Paulie J. L. Loscalzo and Shreeya D. Gounder
